Our new addition

Well the newest member so far to the DH team is our new/ old VW beetle. It is a rented car to help us get from point A to point B as long as Point B is only a short distance from Point A. The rastas who have been working deconstructing/ reconstructing the wall around our house have given it a name in Xhosa, which means slow insect but is far from being onomatopoeia. Varun is now the designated driver as the only person that car will allow itself to be easily driven by is him and considering the rest of the housemates comes from countries where they drive on the other side of the road, it is probably for the best. So yesterday was our first outing in the beetle and if one was to sit in that car, you can’t help by be a little nervous. It is like the Why democracy project at the beginning, where we were all excited but very apprehensive about it and what we want to do, if we were doing thing alright and where we are going. So we got in and made a whole bunch of statements filled with apprehension and than we were off with a slow start. The road was long and bumpy with small problems such as the car stopping mid way at a traffic light and some bigger ones like a slightly flat back tire. All though we reached our destination and once we were there, it was nowhere close to as exciting as getting there. We still don’t know what we want from the why democracy project and it is for most part left up to you the public whose voice, opinions we hope will be shared in the platforms we create. We still need to control the steering and we have considerable trouble steering this project because it’s got a life of its own which we have come to love and admire. This project is a lot like this car but unlike the car, we hope it has much longer life span (though this car has to be at least 40 years old) and it makes an impact in the world we live in, someway or other. /Yukta (Photos: Irini)
